HI everybody,
I thought it would be best if I would just report this week, because I find it very hard to tell each day what I have done. This is probably due to the fact that I write my reflections every day so I guess I would feel repeated if I would write my blog everyday as well. Therefore, the weekly Groby report with your favourite host: Natalia!
On Tuesday I only did Dance, because the business teacher was absent that day!
So only a report on Dance then. Today was our first dancing day and we were all very nervous, we really were. After the warm – up this feeling only increased. The warm up was done by Fiona and we just followed and did what everyone else was doing. The exercises were fun, though, as there were some we really couldn’t do, but we did try them. This had a chaotic but hilarious outcome. We were feeling already tired after this, as it had been a while since we did something intensively active.
When everything was sort out, we got to real business. It was really nice afterwards to hear them say: “We like this dance”. Exhausted but satisfied break came and we felt more secure about what we were doing, as the students seemed to like it. The second group however appeared to contain some negativists. The front row was really cooperative, but the last row, and some of the second, were what we call: LAZY. They had the mood like “I don’t feel like dancing, I don’t want to do this”. What gave us pimples during this session, was seeing the dance in an entire group being accomplished practically perfect! The fact that Rob told us afterwards that our dance would be used for GSCE exam – group dance, flattered us and what flattered us even more was that he liked the dance. This was the boost for our ego that we needed after the second – not so fun – group. After this we were so tired and hungry, but that’s what you get when you are doing active things. This was a very satisfying experience and we will return to the drama studio with a lot of confidence.
On Wednesday, I did French, media studies, PE and business. I will try to give a short report on each subject.
French: Viv warned us this would be a low ability class and that’s why she wanted us to try that out, so we knew how they were and go for the experience, not the teaching.
She couldn’t have put it nicer than low ability I think, because this was a “I don’t want to do that, why do we need French anyway? “ class. In the beginning we were walking around a bit searching for those in desperate need of help or guarding to make sure they were doing something. It ended in us dividing into groups and sitting with pupils who need help and surveillance while the other two teachers were walking around. In the end I got two of them who were working, which was a big thing for me. The other two I didn’t even bother anymore because they would just do
nothing, so giving them attention would have been a waste of my time. I kept thinking to myself: don’t get angry with them, don’t shout, always stimulate them in a positive way … Sometimes harder than you think, but I managed to stay calm and focussed and I even helped them and the one guy started working. The one next to him joined him on some exercises, but was a bit non – active for the others. I didn’t spoke any French whereas they needed the practise, but with this group class management is more important. You really have to get them going and once you’ve gotten them to work, you’re off!
Media studies: Not much to say about this lesson, as we were just observing it, whereas we thought we would be co – teaching with him. So what did we do this lesson? He gave us the subject for the next few lesson: how media can make or break you. We proposed to do something about a Belgian celebrity who is constantly in the news, as that was what he was doing for someone out of the UK. He loved our idea, so during the lesson we made notes on how to analyse the influence of a person on the people. We also already made a skeleton lesson so we could form somehow an idea of how our lessons were going to look like. He immediately liked the fact that we would like to introduce the story first and have an analysis of the story and than do the analysis on the usefulness of this woman. We choose Wendy van Wanten, as we figured she would enhance comments and she is one of the many that has been regularly in the news these past few months.
P.E.: In the beginning I was feeling pretty awkward because I knew nothing about the rules of Rubgy. There were some students who didn’t participate in the lesson this time and they taught me how to pass the ball, how to run and pass, how to hold the ball and how to tackle (this was with a pillow). I could run into a really muscular beautiful boy… Every girls dream you might think, but I was feeling awkward and weird. After some practising I could do a game with the boys …This was absolutely fabulous! In the beginning, I didn’t have a clue on what to do, but after I watched a little bit and got to know the rules, I really meddled in the game. The boys passed to me after a bit. I got involved in it and enjoyed the game. Can’t I get it into my extra curricular / cultural experiences?
The bit I liked the most was Martyn constantly yelling: “Go girl, come on, you’re doing great!” “Good girl!”. It was really motivating, especially when the others who weren’t participated also started shouting like: Come on, you can do it!
I really want to do it again!!! I had so much fun during this lesson and the guys were so friendly to me and accepted the fact that a girl was in their lesson, although there was one guy who didn’t like the fact me being there. He was sent to the changing rooms again and couldn’t participate in the lesson!

Business: This was the first actual teaching I did this week. I was very nervous as I don’t feel that secure about teaching Economy or anything related to that so you can guess how nervous I really was. They were all so big as well, so again: nervous break down for Natalia. The intro went really well because we had them there, I could see that. My introductory mind mapping was really fun. I had the guys with me, they were really into it. The pace of the lesson seemed all right to me, but of course that is subjective and one can not judge that properly. I felt the lesson didn’t go that well, but Sheb told us it was a really good lesson, so I was pleased to hear that. I really thought it wasn’t that good at all because they seemed bored, but maybe that was just because it was the last period of a tiring day. Afterwards they talked to us and said: see you next lesson and I told them that I wouldn’t be in it as I would be bouncing and being me somewhere else, and they started laughing and said it was a pity I wouldn’t be there …
Thursday I did some more Rugby with Timmy and Tanja and Stef who arrived on Wednesday evening. The only lesson I taught was citizenship with Nick. So a brief report of this lesson now:
This was my first lesson citizenship with Nick. I really looked forward to it as I would be involved in the lesson and talk about Belgian identity cards. This is a really lively class group and the main idea was never to get angry so I started to off calmly. The passport thing didn’t grab their attention, but when I started talking about Belgian identity cards, they were really focussed and attentive. They asked similar relevant questions and were truly interested in what I had to say to them. We even had sort of a class discussion and I participated in it. I prepared a little exercise as well so they could make their own identity card and they liked this. Some were very cooperative and asked questions all the time, others I needed to keep an eye on them. But Nick was really grateful I made sure a less involved pupil named Michael had actually written something down on his papers.
It was a good lesson which I think they will all enjoy, as even Nick seemed to enjoy it!
Today, Friday, again only one lesson, due to facts I can’t help anything about. English teacher was of and MFL leaders was skipped for today, so only Travel and Tourism.
This was absolutely fabulous as we did a Belgian Project. The pupils were always interested and asked questions all the time … The most brilliant lesson apart from P.E. and citizenship.
Some more news next Monday with report from the weekend … Feeling very tired … and hungry: bad combination. It’s About Time

See ya soon!

Food ... Glorious Food and ... Molly!

Hi everyone,

Long time not seen, I know, again a few days since I’ve written you anything, but again a really nice report from me on Monday. What have we been up to???
Well, on Friday we went to Nottingham. After the first disappointment of the Tales of Robin Hood being shut down, we went to Nottingham castle. This was another brilliant castle in row. This time I was being clever and bought a guide tour, because I really wanted to know what I was walking in. The castle itself is impressing, but when you get to the thousand of exhibitions (a bit exaggerated but well …) you are even more impressed than you were went entering the castle. I was so down because I couldn’t read it all, because that would take me like … 5 hours to do it all but I got the main idea, so no worries there.

After the castle we went to the court house to an attraction called Crime and Punishment. I was really terrified now, after my last dark tour, but it turned out to be quit all right. It was rather funny but interesting. I learned a lot that day, and I got to sniff a bit of the medieval atmosphere in prisons. I liked it very much how they displayed the change in treating convicts and the way prisons have changed over years. It was really fun to see and everything was worked out so well they got me silent (now that’s got to mean something). What I will remember for ever was a certain scène in our visit. At a certain point we had to meet the prison guard who would explain us all the rules to bear in mind when entering the prison. He was waving his whip and said “You will do as I say” on which Tanja silently replied: “Oh that’s kind of kinky”. We all got the giggles and the man had to do everything not to get out of his role. And even blamed us for it!

After this, we had a little exploring of the town (read: shopping) and went home afterwards, where Evi was going to make us the lovely pasta with salmon and cream. It was so lovely that I almost overate myself (is that possible I can see you thinking, and the answer is : YES). After dinner we went to the pub again (Blame Vermeulen who said we needed to do cultural exploration….) We had a lot of fun there as everyone decided to tell embarrassing sex stories. How can you not have fun??? I will not go into detail about what has been said, as we all solemnly swore this would not leave the Leicester Bunch!

This weekend we haven’t done much actually. After a long working day, we decided to go to BordersBook Club. Any advice for a non – knower: do not go there alone, with no money! It’s a gigantic book store with more book than I’ll ever read in my entire life, but I got hold of some real bargains and fun books. We had a pause at Starbucks and went home to enjoy another great meal of Molly. After the meal some of us went reading, others went working more …

Sunday came and it had the same news as Saturday: work your but off! Although, I must admit that I have personally learned a lot about Belgium, while preparing our Belgian project for Travel and Tourism. I mean, did you know we have a patron saint as well?? It’s Joseph (Jozef)! We learned a lot even we didn’t know, but hey, let me guide you to Bruges or Brussels, I know all the hotspots now!
We saw a scary movie that evening, and Tanja “I WANT TO SEE A SCARY MOVIEGhost” was the only one who walked to us and asked if she could spent the night with us that evening. So far for the brave Tanja, but she was so cute.

Today first day of teaching. The first period was the most exiting one, as I would be teaching French and it has been three years since I’ve actually spoken French, but well, all turned out very well and I managed. I even liked the fact that the carousel work was going so splendid. It was the first time I tried it out in real life and I must admit that I’m even more fond of it than before! French

Than we had the theoretical part of P.E. Jumping Jacksin which Martyn kind of forget we were coming in, so we could do nothing in this lesson actually as he thought we just came by to observe some more, but next week we can do something, even if it is only for 20 minutes, but it will be much better than today. We didn’t do much of actual teaching, but we just participated in the lesson. Next week, we are group discussion leaders, so that will be fun, I guess. Martyn said we could think about some fun things, even provide worksheets or anything like that, so that’s nice. He will helps u where necessary, which is also kind of sweet of him. He really is a nice “lad”.

Then the busy meeting lunchtime. I was capable of being at multiple places, although I was only at one. Hey, isn’t this a mind twist? We finally got some lessons fixed that we weren’t sure we would get!
This evening we were out on our own again as Molly and Dave went of once more. She did however prepare dinner for us: chicken in white wine sauce with peppers (paprika voor de ezels die denken dat ik klare pepers heb gegeten!)and string beans with nicely cooked potatoes. Place Setting

Now we are going to work some more , business as usual ...

Love to hear from you all soon!

Hard work and sightseeing: it does work! It's a matter of to be or not to be!

Whoehoehoehoe (why does it always sounds better when Tigger does that I Can't )

alright then, again it's been a while but I do have to say that we were so tired after our trips to Warwick Castle on Tuesday, and after working for school, I never found the courage to start writing this thing.

Where to start? Oh yes, magnificent Warwick castle Castle . I can tell you, I might not be that historically intelligent, but this castle grasped my attention. It is undescribingly beautiful and big. Appeartantly Madame Tussaud's has bought this castle and since they have been taken over by a big company (a lady told me this, but sorry can't remember the name of the company) a lot of new stuff have been brought to the castle. There were a lot of animations on the field and outside the field. We were a bit disappointed that the ghostly tower was closes, but well, there replacing it by a new attraction that apparently opens at easter (DAMN),named "The Castle Dungeon" (it will be something like the London Dungeon and all the other dungeons in Britain, so it WILL be spooky). But again, the grandeur and beauty of the castle could compensate for this. At some point, you have to stop taking pictures because well, enough is enough. All those rooms were so nice and I absolutely loved it that in every room there was a reading plate with all the information about that room en who was in it. I simply adored the fact that there were pictures to show you that the people depicted in the room, were made to reality. I was so enfatuated by this castle, that I bought the infobrochure and started reading it at home because we didn't take the headphones and I did want to know more about this castle.

Back home I first had a litlle frustration outburst moment to my boyfriend (poor sucker) and after this mental breakdown ( I do am homesick you know, I'm even missing my Mom, that's gotta mean something) we watched "Another Cinderalla Story". This is a dance movie full of romance and gravy shit, but a girl sometimes needs that! Lets See A Movie

Yesterday we did some schoolwork because we felt the gentle breeze of Bert Cruysweegs and Nathalie Castreuil in our neck and it wasn't a funny one, I can tell you! So we decided to work on the endwork a little bit and observations and learning objectives while the others went to Leicester to do some more sightseeing. So not much news to tell about that as I don't think anybody of you will be up to hear some about writing things for the theoretical part of the endwork. Or do you?? if so: call +32485072834 Cell Phone 3 We practised our dance this evening because we really had to get started on that thing as well. But this time, it was Groby wind blowing in our direction.

Today, about the same ... Work Work Work. We slept so long we couldn't even say goodbye to Molly and Dave, who had set off to New Castle. Everybody worked really hard and tonight we probably will go to the pub to have some sort of relaxtion. But report about that the next time I write you something.

Hope to hear some of you soon because I am really missing all of you, and no one ever writes anything on this blog. So Please let me know that you all miss me too...

Love Always
Hugs And Kisses

Yours, Natalia

Shall I compare thee to Stratford upon Avon? ... Impossible

Hello,

Finally gotten into the internet. It's really hard to get logged on, when all six of us are on the internet. But well, your famous reporter has gotten onto it, so prepare to be scared! ARe you brave enough to read this experience?? ( this sentence might not scare you, but wait until you enter a big dark room with creapy music and only Timmy to seek comfort to!)

We had a really great weekend. On Saturday we went shopping and Timmy got his hair cut. OMG, we never expected him to do that, but apperently he has gotten some manly characteristics (the balls) ... It's really much better now.

That evening we decided to go clubing Dancing ( well actually Tanja and Ann really nagged our ears of ... Nah, only kidding!). It was a real weird and odd experience, as we were like about the only white people in the club. We were mainly surrounded by Pakis and Indians. Speaking of a lifetime experience! We were home about three o'clock p.m. and on Sunday, we were all very lazy, because non of us had slept a lot. I can't talk for the others, but I took a little nap (of two and a half hours) before we had the big sunday diner. Every one was there and Molly cooked a lovely diner, and of course pie, but it felt a bit awkward to me, as I didn't really felt part of the family at that point. Probably just me, because I do had a great time that evening, but I was so stuffed!

Today was probably one of the best in the whole period of our stay. I really enjoyed our trip to Stratford. I bought some magnificent things and at a certain point, I definitely had to stop because my bag was starting to weigh on my shoulder. But I mean, the complete works of Shopping Spree William Shakespeare for £1.99, can't beat that, right? The town was so lovely and the walk we did was so much fun. I felt like as if I were back in old England. We wanted to enter the birthplace of WS, but we had to visit all the houses and because we thought it was rather expensive just to go into someones house, we didn't do this. I now regret it, as I really would have loved going in there, but £9 was a bit too much for "house seeing".

I ate my first fish and chips, and at first it was all wonderful and allright, but later on I got really sick, so probably, it's not my cup of tea. Or is it food? Only kidding ... The church was not that impressive ( The Holy Trinity) but still worthwhile in my opnion. We saw WS's grave, which again was dissapointingly small, but apperently that's because most of his work was published after his death, so now it makes perfect sense to me why it was so small. Church

I had like the biggest embarrassing moment in my life when bigmouth me said I wanted to go into the Creaky Cauldron, because it looked spooky. Ann and Timmy joined me and I was the only chicken poo in the group. I discovered that I can't see anything in total darkness with little lights. I never felt at ease, and always expected people to jump on me to give me a good scare, atlhough only Timmy did that (he thought it was funny and it probably was as I screamed for Shocked 1 entire Stratfordshire ). They said I was cute, as Timmy said that I always have a big mouth but now I was holding his hand like the last straw ... The only room I liked was the Harry Potter one. We could do the sorting hat thing, and this was really fun. I was sorted with Huffelpuf, but I think the bloke just pressed any button as he sorted Timmy to Slytherin (and Timmy isn't that badblooded at all!)!

This evening we had dinner with Sophie and her parents. Sophie is a girl who also came to Leicester two years ago and decided she loved it so much, that she stayed here! (OK maybe the English boyfriend was a big incentive, but still, it's thoughts that count) We had so much fun during this meal. Oh dear, but how confusing it was talking both English and Dutch.

This said and done we are now in our beds typing this blog, keeping you up. It's rather late as you can tell at the time of this posting. Tomorrow we have Warwick Castle planned, so looking forward to more scares, as Sophie said they also had a haunted section. Wooooooooow, I want to do that ... maybe ... We'll see tomorrow! (I always want to do those things until I am actually in the dark, then I want to go back.)

Whish you all lovely dreams and more ...

Sorry folks, bad internet

Hello there,
my third attempt this week to post anything on the blog, because it wasn't possible for three days to post anything (which is rather frustrating).

Therefore I will try and do my best to describe these three days to you all.

We have mainly been observing lessons, of which some were rather interesting and others were pretty boring. During these observations we were alowed to talk to the pupils, but of course at that point we never really understood what was mentionned by this.
What struck us most, was that there were faults in the French syllabus, taught by a native French speaker. Might be that she hadn't written the syllabus herself, but still she could have checked on spelling mistakes. I mean: chamber (chambre) metre (has to be with two t's) , etc. In the French lessons, not all the time was French spoken, which was strange, as we are taught to use the target language all the time. But I suppose it is normal to do that when you are teaching first years in a language.

What is really great at the school is the kitchen: it's absolutely lovely to eat there because there is such marvellous meals. And all that for maximus £2.30. Isn't that great??! Anyway, since we've tried one thing, we dine at the lunchroom all the time.

Another great thing about this expercience: I have discovered that Tanja and I, and Evi and I are very much alike. We really get along very well and it's nice to finally meet and get to know them. After three years, it would be about time...

yesterday we had parents evening and afterwards we went to the pub. In the pub we had some typically English food: Lyndsay and I had steak and mushroom pie which was absolutely tasty. It was my first pie actually so I was looking forward to eating that for the first time. Tanja had a delicous vegetarian dish, Timmy and Ann both had Italian chicken and Evi went for rump steak. We had so much fun mainly because Evi and I have the same stupid laugh when we get the giggles. Every time something funny occurred, Evi and I had the giggles and the entire table laughed so laud, the entire pub was staring at us at a certain point. We appologised, but apparently that meant you were having fun and in the UK it isn't something to be embarrased about. The bar tender told us, that the men coming down there made a lot more noise than we do.

This morning we realised it was Friday the 13th, which could have been a lead to our absolutely terrible day today. We had a meeting with Viv in which she announced that the staff wasn't pleased with us. We were all taken aback by this, but after talking to Viv, it appeared that we had been underinformed! If we had known all that beforehand, a lot of trouble wouldn't be in this position. But we took the bulls by the horn and jumped into the adventure with new courage and intention to change the feeling the staff has towards us.

Pupils and teachers even told us some "goodies" to go out to, which might be very interesting if we wanted to go out sometime.

After a tiring day, we were able to set out timetables for the first teachingweek, which will not be a regular teaching week like we're used to. I will be doing a lot of co - teaching, which means: help the teacher during lessons with pupils who have difficulties copping or who are regardless and unaffected by any means of teaching. Of the fifteen lessons I will be teaching, there will be about three subjects I teach myself, or with someone of us, but we have made the lessons ourselves.

We finally know what we will be up to those weeks and finally I am looking forward to teaching there.

I can write so much more, but well, let's keep it to this!

See yah later floks!

Day 2: accident prone me and roundabouts: bad combination

hello
Eigen Smiley

Day 2 : Trip to school in snow and on a slippy road.

Today was the first meeting with the school and its staff. The school is really big and I got lost like a thousand times. It's really weird to get used to this school system. They address their teacher with first names and all. They just stand up whenever they feel like it and they are totally differently dressed than our students. If we would dress like that, we would get expelled.

Getting to the school, again a big adventure. EVen starting the day might be difficult for candles on the toilet, as I got them into the toilet during flushing ... Oh yes, only I can do that. This was my third accident already, after knocking of a painting yesterday and half destroying the cupboard, but it was never my intention and I think it was already like that when I opened it ... Shy Girl

Then I had to get out of this carplace on the slippery road, on which I had fallen on my ***. I had to be brave and cool and said: I will check the road, wearing high heels ... Stupid cow! Any way, so far so good, but then the GPS decided to fail on us. NO signal and no signs on the map to tell us where to go. So, improvise Natalia! My copilots weren't awake yet, but after a while the GPS worked and yes, we got to Groby ... finally.

This adventure was nothing compared to the school we would be dropped in. Viv told us a few general things, and then we were dropped into the big thing! We felt totally lost and confused, the first lesson me and my partner in crime, Tanja, had to see was so boring we almost fell asleep. It was really how we would NOT teach. Photography was an eyeopener. So brilliant the works these pupils make...

Oh yeah, and we discoverd where Vermeulen gets her ideas for portfolios: Groby Community Collage! How often we heard the words course work portfolio, self evaltuation, peer evaluation, ... Unbelievable! The food was really nice and cheap.

At the end of the day we had tutoring sessions: these are sessions in which teacher talk individually to pupils about their upcoming report. Really nice experience where I could talk to pupils and get to now the mentality of the British pupils a little bit! Fun to do, really nice.

Now, part two of this wonderfull chaotic day: finding a petrol station and shop! This was absolutley roundaboutish!!! I can't count the times the GPS said neem volgende rotonde en neem vierde afslag on two hands. Those are dangerous f*cking things, but hey, I survived. Shopping was really fun: finally some slippers, as I forgot them at home Loser and it is really cold here. We got the food for the rest of the week and had some fun over there. YOu know, they give sacks there, and you don't have to pay for them...

Evi cooked us a lovely meal which we all much enjoyed. BBQ After dinner, Timmy Star shared some interesting stuff with us and we had big laughs all the time. Dining with the bunch is good for the belly.

Any way, we're up to see a movie now, and they're nagging to hurry up, so I will finish now.

Bye Bye Love you all and write to you soon

First impressions: "Das toch ni zo groot eh!"

HI there,

after a long, exciting but tiring journey we finally made it to Desford. We kind of got lost in France already, where we proudly announced our very early arrival so we could take a boat early. Unfortunately we were disolved of our illusion when the man said: This is for Callais, you are at Duinkerke! Oh, dear, embarrasement n°1. We made it to Callais and sailed of at 11.40. Getting in the boat with our "bus" was an adventure we will never forget, but getting of was the biggest adventure of them all, because here our English tour started.
On the boat it was very difficult not to falter and not to hit any walls, but hey "accident prone" is stamped on my forehead so who was cleaning the walls all the time? Yes, ME! Tanja topped it all by saying The White Cliffs of Dover didn't seem that big at all ( she said this when we still had to sail about 30 minutes.)

The English adventure was really scary in the beginning, but once we got off, it was rather easy. Ann started out trip and drove the biggest part. I took over at the end of the M25 and led us to Leicester. Unfortunately, the roundabouts, which we all feared, where at my time of the driving. I can tell you it's true: The English have always had their special way, and it's about the same with their roundabouts. Most of the time you don't even notice that you ARE ON a roundabout!

After a long and tiring trip we are finally here, ready to start the lifetime expercience Mrs Vermeulen promised us.

Write to you soon

Love and miss you all ...

Hi everybody,

finally my first message, as my stupid computer seems to refuse to open this site. Ann will be fixing it in Leicester, and in case my obstinate digital brain keeps refusing, I'll find a way to keep you up with all the hotties and gossips...

Almost leaving and this is starting to be harder than I thought. I'll be missing everyone very much.

And for those of you who don't do English (referring to my own boyfriend), I will write in Dutch as well.

See yah soon!
